About the “Swimming Pool Effect”
2024

The "swimming pool effect" refers to the tendency of individuals or items in a group to spread out evenly across a space when given freedom of movement or selection. This phenomenon is often observed in various contexts, from the arrangement of office seating to the distribution of patrons in a swimming pool.

The swimming pool effect in my work expresses the social injustice of intersectionality. For example, in a swimming pool, everyone is distributed relatively evenly in the water. Still, the varying depths of the pool cause specific individuals or groups to be in deeper or shallower areas, resulting in unfairness. This work conveys that in society, the existence of dense crowds inevitably marginalizes certain groups.
