ARTIST BIO
Yangjingyi Liu (b. 2003) is a Chinese artist whose practice is deeply influenced by her transnational upbringing. Having spent a decade studying and living abroad in Melbourne, Australia, Montreux, Switzerland, and San Francisco, USA, she developed a unique and nuanced connection to her homeland through the lens of distance, movement, and cultural contrast.
Yangjingyi began painting during her undergraduate studies and was honored with the All College Honor from California College of the Arts. Her work has since been exhibited in the Bay Area and Europe. In 2024, she was selected as a finalist in HMVC’s international online exhibition, where her oil paintings were featured on the iconic Times Square billboards in New York City.
In 2025, Yangjingyi collaborated with renowned light artist Jim Campbell’s studio. Her stop-motion animation was displayed on San Francisco’s Salesforce Tower as part of a public light installation, illuminating the city’s skyline with her vision.
Yangjingyi explores themes of emotional dislocation, identity, and the psychological impact of rapid societal and technological shifts through her oil paintings. Her work is marked by bold, saturated colors and a deep sensitivity that bridges personal experience with collective reflection.
ARIST STATEMENT
As an oil painter, my work explores the emotional impacts of rapid societal and technological change on marginalized groups. Shaped by my experiences in Countries like China, Australia, Switzerland, and the United States, my art reflects the tension, anxiety, and dislocation felt in fast-paced urban life. Through bold, saturated colors, I channel feelings of loneliness, pain, and intimacy to create authentic connections with viewers, capturing the intensity of my inner world amid the pressures of modern society.
